Taking the Daily 5 to the Next Level - the Weekly List

My daughter "helping" with the laundry.

If you haven't yet read my blog on The Daily Five Strategy, I recommend checking that out before reading this.

After we had several months of success with The Daily Five, we realized it would be helpful to get more organized about the other things that need to get done regularly in our house, but that did not need to happen every day.

Enter The Weekly List. This is where we added tasks that need to get done each week, assigning them to a particular day of the week.

Here's how it works for us:

  • We picked Monday to wash towels. It's a pretty easy task, and assigning it to a day of the week means we don't go weeks with dirty towels or forget when they were last washed. We also top off the cat food in our automatic cat feeder.

  • Tuesday, we do our laundry that we like to air dry (nicer clothes, jeans, bathing suits, etc.). We also make lunches for our kids for the rest of the week that night (we use these lunchboxes).

  • Wednesdays, we finish up the laundry by washing clothes that will go into the dryer and all the kids' laundry. We also have to put our dirty diapers on the porch that night (we use a cloth diaper service for our littlest one).

  • Thursday, we put our trash/recycling/compost bins out by the curb for pickup the next day.

  • Sometime during the weekend, we make kids' lunches for Monday and Tuesday, make a rough meal plan for the week, and buy any groceries we need (we use Amazon Fresh for groceries and are big fans).

How do we handle tasks that are less frequent than weekly?
Some things need to get done, but neither daily nor weekly. For example, we need to pay our preschool and daycare providers monthly. And we need to change our furnace filter annually. For those, I'm currently using Asana's recurring tasks feature. If you're not already using a system like that, your smart phone's reminder app will likely do recurring reminders for you pretty well.

How do you track weekly tasks? What about the monthly and annual ones? Share in the comments!
